The Regional Water Authority (RWA) represents 21 water providers serving 2 million people in the Sacramento region. The goal of RWA’s advocacy program is to ensure that regional needs and concerns are positively represented on legislative and regulatory policies and actions. Our team has been working with RWA to achieve this goal since 2012, throughout some of California’s most turbulent and historic water years.
Program highlights include:
New insights through public opinion research—including a statistically valid public opinion poll and focus groups that explored groundwater management and water banking.
Dozens of published opinion articles and stories on the region’s priority water issues—from the deficiencies in groundwater legislation to water conservation regulations during drought to the region’s water management successes.
Special short-term campaigns that capitalized on opportunities to share the region’s good work, such as:
- “Drought Champs”—promoted the region’s water conservation successes during the drought to electeds, regulators and water industry influencers.
- “Keeping the Water Flowing”—raised awareness about the essential work of local water providers during the coronavirus emergency and included an op-ed published in Comstock’s Magazine and digital advertising on Facebook and the Google Display Network.
Engaging tours and events for legislative leaders and stakeholders—including multiple tours for state and federal leaders and staff on subjects such as region’s response to drought, water quality challenges and work to enhance the region’s climate resiliency through water banking and efficiency, as well as events such as RWA’s successful Water Affordability Symposium, Conversation on Water with Congresswoman Doris Matsui and the RWA 15th Anniversary and SGA 20th Anniversary events.
Eye-catching collateral materials and tools—that tell the region’s story on climate resiliency, water banking, groundwater management, water supply, water efficiency, policy priorities and other topics. Materials have included dozens of backgrounders, fact sheets and presentations that explore RWA’s work within the region, the Water Bank and climate resiliency; the RWA and SGA websites; quarterly RWA newsletter; Advocacy Program Annual Report; and more.
